High Altitude balloon

In class we are building a balloon launch that will rise to about 110,000 feet. We need ideas on what kind of data should we collect. We need all the ideas we can get. also we want to make a camera take pictures at certain altitudes or a live vide feed. But how would we go about doing that. Like anyone know of some good cameras or whatever to use. We have $150 to spend on the launch capsule including cameras and what not.

You could collect data about humidity, air pressure, temperature, ect...
Will this balloon be recovered to collect the data or are you looking for something to transmit the data back in real-time?

we will recover the balloon. I just thought it would be cool for live feedback.

Would be great to have a camera with a live video feed . Depending upon your weight limitations, you could setup a mini-PC with a camera and a 802.11b connection and do a video conferencing type setup or something. Not sure how 802.11b will perform over that vertical distance which is about 20 miles but it would probably work reasonably well if you use the right antennas.

I would collect GPS data to track the movement of the ballon, then compare it's travel against the atmospheric conditions. Some handheld GPS sensors can be placed into a record mode to track movements.

Atmospheric conditions like humidity, temperature, and air pressure can be recorded by a number of inexpensive retail electronic devices. Just make sure to select a model that can record data at set intervals.

Relaying a camera feed will prove problematic for $150 given the height estimates. Conveying video over 110,000 feet is quite difficult for low-power devices. You also have to account that a ballon can only lift so much weight, and the batteries needed for a transmitter maybe beyond the capabiltity of your ballon's lifting potential.
