bad CD rom block

I am getting error messages like you wouldn't believe. When I try to find what the problem is I get a message " The device CD rom has a bad block." What can I do to fix this.

Can you elaborate more on your problem? Does this effect only one cd? Does the cd work on a known good drive? Do other cds work on the problem drive?

Usually with respect to HDs, bad blocks mean the drive is semi-broken or is on its way out. I have heard of bad blocks on cds before, but have never seen it myself.

Well there could be several causes, like maybe a dirty or scratched cd, in which case you should repair it.
Also how often do you clean the lens?
Try getting a kit to clean your cd rom and maybe dust it out. If not and you dont have a warranty on it, maybe you could open it up, unless you don't have a warranty seal on it to begin with, open it and dust it then maybe take a cotton swab and alcohol and use one end to clean it and the other to dry it.

Usually means a bad sector or clustor..like on a hard drive..except on a CDR disk..it cannot be repaired. I read that Nero has a test in the tool kit.. I have that, but have not used it yet..Nero version 6.0.

Somebody posted just recently that the scan disk(?) in the took kit discovered a bad block on a CD of his.

There may be the possibility that a laser that is getting weak might show a bad block on a CD that it could not read properly. Be sure your CD's are squeaky clean.. I use windex myself, only on the bottom side (opposite from the label side). You can try a CD internal cleaner..but I have found them pretty ineffective.. having run a cleaner without decent results, then opened the drive and cleaned the laser lens with a cotton swab dampened with windex..helped.

What happened is my computer when clicking for anything would not allow me to do anything for about a minute or two and then would work OK again. I would then get notification of an error and thats when i found out what the problem was. This veritas recorder was in my computer when I bought it. Computer is less than a year old and is still under warranty but I don't know if the recorder is covered,

Do you have the latest drivers for the drive? Also have u tried opening the case disconnecting the drive and rebooting (only do this if it doesnt void your warrenty). Also I would give the computer and device manufacturers a call. Can't hurt to ask them, right?

CD rom block

Thanks for all the answers, guys, but I am going to take it in to be repaired. I bought it 01-22-2003 so it is still under warranty. I'll let you know what happens. Again, thanks a lot.
