Dell XP home CD key doesn't match the CoA sticker.

Hi all, and HNY!

The new Demented 4600 I rec'd has a different cd key (checked using "Keyfinder" utility) than is on the certificate of authenticity. Is this a problem, or is that the way oem OS's are installed, one key for a "ghost" image?

Frankly, I could give a rat's ***, but I gave it to my brother for xmas and he wants to make sure the "internet police", undoubtedly spearheaded by Bill gates, don't come crashing through his door!

As always, thanks in advance.

You can actually change the key- but first I'd go to the Help button under your Start button- and ask the question: Is this copy of Windows genuine? It will take you to M$'s website and give them you address and phone number so the police can get there quicker.

Personally- if you are reasonably sure that you are legit- then just give that rat's bootie away!

You don't need to worry about this for OEM systems. And, yes, this is due to the fact that Dell load the software from a drive image program. You'll also notice that activation is not required for this OS.

Send a message via AIM to eminem_rh25
if your bro wants to make sure it is legal, deactivate it and reactivate using the key on the coa.

If you read my post, you'll notice that activation is not required for Dell OEM OSs.

Dell's do too...

And if you read my post, you will notice that I'm stating Dell OEM PC's don't need activation out of box, but often do if you reinstall the os. Mine did when I replaced the HD and did a clean install...

From my experience with my machine, and with what I've always read, Dell activates your copy for you before shipping, just as most retailers do.
