Burn!
Ok, I did something rather stupid.. I tried to insert the power connector to a remote FDD while the machine was turned on. However, once I placed it on, the whole machine just shut down and I could smell this faint burning smell.
Looks like it came from the FDD (the power connector stinks like hell of the smell). Now.. the problem is that the PC will not boot now
The CD/DVD Drive works and everything powers on including the case fans and CPU fans but nothing is on the screen but the video card seems to be workin since the fan is on as well. Any suggestions and ideas? |

Try another power supply...
remove everything from the motherboard except ram, cpu/heatsink&fan, video card..no keyboard, no mouse, no drives (none)..no nothing other than the bare essentials above...see if you get a POST screen...if you do, add one item at a time back and check for POST..when it fails to POST, you have your bad part.
If the system will not POST with just the essentials, you have a defective PSU or motherboard, ram or CPU.

this is my 1000th post! |

Haha yer.. my brain switched off and I used it like it was PnP
Only the floppy connector smells burnt others seem fine..
Btw, if the PSU was stuffed wouldn't the fans and everything won't power on?

BTW what is FDD? Anyway one time I tried to connect a power connector to my mobo (the square connector by the CPU) while it was powering down...I almost died...I saw a blue spark jump from the plug into the connector on the mobo. I almost sh*t myself especially cuz it was on my moms work computer. Anyways I just let it sit for about an hour then I tried turning it back on and it worked fine...

The PSU can be damaged but still function. If the regulator is stuffed, you don't know what voltages are being applied. Also, there are other voltages than just the 12 volts that the fans work off..maybe something got stuffed somewhere other than the 12 volts. I donno, but its as good a starting place as any

FDD is the floppy drive, HDD is the hard drive.
