Router Issue

Ok, first thing is first, this is not an urgent issue. This just annoys me a little. I have just installed a router on my network and seem to be having a few ping related issues, on mIRC when resolving my ident it takes like 5 minutes to connect, but when I hook the cable modem directly into my computer it does it instantly without lag or any problem at all.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me, what the problem is, or how i can stop this annoying lag when connecting to any server that needs to resolve an ident or something similar. It is really annoying.

Another question, ... is there any settings that I could change to boost the efficiency of my network, like tweak settings to enhance my ping for online games or whatever. I have only completed my CCNA1 Certificate so I am still a rookie to the subject.

Any help would be appreciated...

hmm...I'm not very familiar with IRC so i couldn't tell you directly what the problem is, but my guess is that the port IRC normally uses is turned off so it has to change to another port, and that port detection is what takes so long.

Also as far as game pings go, a router shouldn't have much of an effect at all on game pings AFAIK.

i would advise just browsing through the router setup and see what sounds like an interesting tweak.
