Maxtor is more quiet, but Seagate seems to handle bus overclocking better. If you are looking to overclock your system bus, then avoid Maxtor, IMO. I've run Seagate (E)IDE drives up to 40mHz (200mHz fsb on KT333 systems) with no problems. Other folks have reported issues with Maxtors at mild bus overclocks.
If running at (near) default bus speeds, then let $$$ be your deciding factor... just about all of today's drives are very, very good.
