a decent ftp server for linux/gentoo? and some questions about it.

hey there. hopefully everyone is having a great new year. i know im not.
anyways.

i've installed pro-ftpd,oftpd and pure-ftpd

i managed to creat a new account with pure-pw , and i've specified the port in puregui which is 4000 , but seems they still can't connect to me. im behind a router. and i opened the port 4000

what else im doing wrong. is there a debug mode? or should i change the port?

the other thing. how do someone actually make previlieges to specific user on the ftp.
i mean i want my cousin to upload files but not delete them or be able to "ok even if he can upload/delete them" i dont mind. i'll make a special folder for him.. but there are some people who want to download, and i have to make sure no one would delete a file from me.

sorry but this is the 1st time ever i considered making an ftp server. so i dont know what to do or where to start.

thanx.

By default FTP is 21. Wouldn't you need some sort of other software to translate that to go to your port 4000?

Try changing to 21 and opening that to your server and see if anybody can connect then.

yes 21 and 20 are opened. on my router
im using vsftpd
ftp> open 192.168.1.2
Connected to 192.168.1.2.
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection

thought i get this also,
root@gentoo vsftpd # netstat -a | grep ftp
tcp 0 0 *:ftp *:* LISTEN

root@gentoo vsftpd # /etc/init.d/vsftpd start
* WARNING: "vsftpd" has already been started.

so it means that its working ... here's my config file too.

Looks okay to me

can you ftp to localhost as a regular user? If you can ftp in as a local user or from another node inside your lan then take another look at the router settings again, and did you make sure that the Linux box isn't running a firewall? -are remote incoming TCP/IP connections enabled?

My RH9 vsftpd config:

Code:
# Example config file /etc/vsftpd.conf
#
# The default compiled in settings are very paranoid. This sample file
# loosens things up a bit, to make the ftp daemon more usable.
#
# Allow anonymous FTP?
anonymous_enable=YES

To continue with this question...

As a matter of fact I need to be able to change the default gate, because my provider blocks port 21 (and 20) for security reasons.

They have advised me to change the port to a number >1024
Al the gates <1024 are blocked by the provider with exception port 25 for smtp.

I know people often use 8021 in these cases, but I have no idea how to change this for vsftpd.

Appart from that the server is working fine for internal use.

I use pro-ftp.

On their site there is a walk trough for setting up a pasive ftp. It will give you an example for the proftp.conf file. With mine I have forwarded 20 21 and 62000-64000 on the router and opened those ports in my iptables firewall on the ftp server. It works in active/passive and anonymous --has a builtin chroot for the directorys, can be used in inetd or stand alown. Its very stable.

Link for basic set up.
Gui front ends for it.
Info for passive.

Have fun
