Mouse clicking problem

This is happening on my Windows ME computer and is driving me nuts.

Whenever I use the left click button the computer thinks I've clicked several times, so if I've just click on the back button say in IE it takes me back several pages. This is happening in all applications not just IE. I could click to highlight a picture but the computer thinks I've double clicked and opens up the editing program.

It's not the mouse at fault, it works OK on the other computer and I've tried other good mice too. I've tried adjusting the mouse properties so the click is slow but it's still wrong.

Any ideas?

Nearly forgot, the other problem is when I want to highlight text by left clicking then dragging, the text will highlight but as soon as I release the button it unhighlights. I have to have several 'goes' before it highlights.

I have had similar happenings..and it turned out to be a flaky mouse button switch. Can you try that mouse in another machine?..or try a different mouse on that machine?..

Go to control panel and open the mouse applet, slow down the mouse click slider...also, try swapping the mouse from right hand to left hand (puts the right button instead left in control...see if the problem follows).

I've tried this mouse in another machine and it works fine. I've also tried other working mice in the ME machine and the problem appears, so it can't be a mechanical problem.

Bovon - I did swap the control from right to left button and this did seem to cure it, but it's a nuisance as I keep clicking the left button! I've also uninstalled and reinstalled the mouse but the prob is still there.

same experience that i have had with some old over-used mouse. click it once, yet it thinks you click it twice. very annoying. probably a switch problem.
