Weighing 3 Yr. Warrentee --Against WUXA

I'd rater get a wide screen Notebook for about $1,300, but ALL i've seen --even at higher prices -- come with a one year warrentee.

I've seen a Toshiba Tecra or two at about that price with a THREE yr. Warrentee. But a normal 4:3 screen.

I'm inclined to think that a laptop would Need a 3 Year warrentee --although I wouldn't make a deal about that on other things, except maybe a hard drive.

What do you think?
Is the warrentee length all THat important on a Laptop ?

I think the warranty length is critical. I wouldnt buy without being able to get a 3 year warranty - even if I have to pay extra for it.

if its a desktop computer i usually dont go for the warranty because most of the time its something simple to fix.


with laptops there are so many small pieces and having it move around constantly a warranty is very important. sure nothing could ever happen to it, but there is always that chance that something could happen and you will be kicking yourself when you dont have the warranty and a nice paper weight

See if the store you want to buy it from has an extended warranty. I got a 3 year warranty from Future Shop here in Canada on my new laptop. If there is a major problem that wouldn't be cost-worthy to repair, they'll give me a new laptop free of charge over those 3 years.

You can get wide screen notebooks at www.powernotebooks.com with up to 4 years warranty. You can't go wrong there.

This may be one case where an extended warrantee is a good idea, especially if you want it and no one is trying to shove it down your throat!

Warantees are statistical calculations, so I'd pay attention to "how much and how long" one is offered.

A cheaper three year warrantee on a higher priced laptop is likely to mean it is more dependable. (statistically). So you need to look at the total package cost, as well as the cost to you (mentally) if it fails and has to be repaired.

I think extended warranty on a laptop, digital camera, ipod, lcd monitor etc is extremely important to have. It costs a fortune for parts and are not as easy to fix as say a desktop.

If you buy extended warranty from manufacturer you are prolly just buying a extended manufacturers warranty against manufacturer defects. If you buy from a retailer like Best Buy, CompUSA etc they take care of nonmanufacturer defects, asin power surge, screen pixelation etc.

I've seen two types of extended warranties offered.

1. Standard warranty for manufacturing defects, part failures, etc.

2. Above plus drops, spills, whatevers.

Determine which is being offered and which you feel best suits your needs.
