Home Networking Thru Router

Ok, I now have two computers and I would like to have them connected to each other. I have one printer and one scanner, and I would like to be able to print things out of this computer and have it go to the printer in the other room where the other computer is. I am connected using a Lynksis cable modem and wired router.

What would I have to do to make that happen?

Thanks.

Which OS? Windows?

In windows I always go:
start/settings/printers/add printer/network printer/browse and browse to the printer on the other box and select it. It should then ask you for the drivers etc.

Do you have your PCs already networked?

Yes, its Windows XP. And since I dont know anything about networking, Im going to say no because I havent done anything with them except for the fact they are both hooked up to a router. Other than that nothing's going on. So no, I dont believe they are networked.

EDIT: I tried those steps, and it doesnt list any printers, so I assume I the computers are not networked.

got the firewalls off on both comps? make sure of that for starters.....then go to network neighborhood and see if you see the other comp.

And I guess we could ask.....do you already have the internet on both machines?

Ok, I've rebooted from Linux to XP

So your broadband works on both PCs? Can you see the other computer in My Network Places? If not, you can set the network up manually or:

Right click My Network Places and run the Network Setup Wizzard.

If you want to turn off the firewall like JP suggested:

Right click "My Network Places"
Choose "properties"
Right click "Local Area Connection"
Choose "properties"
Choose the "Advanced Tab"
& uncheck the firewall box

When it asks what the address of the network place is; what should I put?

Hmm, under Network Connections, it shows 2 LAN connections. Do you think the second one is the other computer?

There are actually 3 but only 2 are connected. There is a 1394 connection, a LAN connection, and a LAN 2 which says a network cable is unplugged.

??? You've lost me, are you in the add network place or the network setup wizzard? You want to run the network setup wizzard.

Yes, it is the wizard. When I chose to specify another location [since I dont use MSN] it asks for an internet or network address.

EDIT: Maybe I should use the "Set up a home or small ofice" wizard?
