bitdefender

Anyone use bitdefender anti-virus for their samba server? I downloaded the trial (90 days) version and set it up--it installed very smoothly. After installing it howerver, my very under powered server (P1 200mx /128mb ram/80gig hde) was brought to a crawl. After about 15 minutes it became imposible to even log on to the server--when you can it was incredibly slow --like a crippled 10base. Anyway I did a "ps aux" and found that bdcore (the core of the antivirus program) was using 65% of the system memory (smbd and nmbd together rarely use more than 3%).

Enough background, does anyone know if it is a onetime only occurance? ie it scans for 3-4 hours then then only monitors traffic on the server, Or is it a big fat memory leak? Or you simply need a 2 gigs'o ram to run it?

I shut it down and everything runs smoothly now. Would still like to use it however.

Any thoughts welcome

dan

I am not familiar with bitdefender, but norton takes a lot of time and memory the first time it is run.

Was this the first time you had it running?

If so you may have cuaght the program in its first time update where it is scanning/logging ALL the files on your server. After the primary scan the use is reduced to what is changed- a much easier/quicker scan.

Remove the server from service if possible and allow bitdefender to complete its primary search or start it up when the usage will be minimized, and give it time to do complete its scan.

Hope this helps.
