is my hard drive on its way out?

ok for a while now my harddrive (maxto 40 gb 7200rpm) makes like a big "clunk" (thats exactly how it sounds) when i boot up my machine, for a while i thought that it was normal but today, i boot it up and it make three shot "clunk" clunk" clunk" noises then i hear it kinds loosing power and (like when a harddrive shuts down) and then i hear it regain the power. after this, it took my bios longer then usual to detec the hard drive. obviously this is not normal so is it as good as dead? i heaven't tried rebooting yet so im not sure if the problem is going to presist. ur hellp is greately appriciated and i will keep u updated on the situation.

thanx.

It would probably be smart to start backing your stuff up on CD's or another hard drive. I would be worried if my HD started saying "clunk" to me

Hopefully it is still under warranty. Like the others said I think it is going south. Check the date on it or run the serial number through their website to check warranty status. That drive may have a 3 year warranty.

yea ill pull it out in a sec but first i want to run that utility but for some reason the program is only detecting the SATA channels on my abit nf7-s and not the IDE channels so i can't select a drive. i tried to disable my SATA controller from the bios but it still lists the controlls in the program and says no device installed. how do i get it to detect my drive?
