power supply help
I'm looking to get a new power supply for my computer, and im not sure what I should buy. I want between 400-500w and good priced. Any suggestions would be greatly appreceated (brands, web sites, specific power supplys). I found a good deals on a Powmax 400w and a Ultra 500w, but have never heard of either, any input would be nice. Thanks.

I just reviewed a Fortron 530watt powersupply and that was a rock solid PSU. It's pretty cheap in price, definetly less than a $100.
Airflow in the Fortron unit was very good, comes with a sleeved ATX motherboard connector, Serial ATA power connector, lots of other goodies
BTW, if you decide to pick up a Zalman PSU for some odd reason, it's made by Fortron http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1841&p=15
And Fortron=Sparkle and vice versa.

Sure didn't realize Sparkle was a Fortron in drag! I have read bad things about Sparkle, but Have used several Fortrons from back in the AT/386 days. Not one ever failed...however, we didn't push a PSU to the ragged edge back then either. I still have a Fortron 300 watt in my backup AT machine... I have had that case since old shep was a pup. (Well, at least since I had an ASUS K6-2 233)?.. I think it was a 233, maybe 300/333..cant remember..bottom line is, that was back about `95.. and the Fortron is still right there ready to go when I switch her on.

I reviewed a total of 5 Fortron units, and they were very good units with a one exception, the 300 watt unit, but I used the mentality of an enthusiast, so it was pretty crappy but for an average user, IMO I think it would have been good.

Fortron units have a noise killer, short circuit proctection, and over voltage protection. Some of the units have a user controllable potentiometer to control the exhaust fan.
Jab-tech.com also has the Vantec Ion PSU for about $60.

I'm suprised nobody has suggested Allied yet, they make great power supplies. They aren't too expensive either. 35-60 bucks.
