Have you tried loading the BIOS defaults?
Power on the computer, and press the <Del> key until the BIOS setup appears. On the menu, try "Load Optimized Defaults" and see if that works. (You might also try "Load Fail-Safe Defaults")
You chould check the jumpers on the back of the CD drive. If the drive is "slave", then set the jumpers to "Slave" (and if 'master', then set to 'master)
Also, if you aren't using an 80-wire IDE cable, try that! On newer drives, a 40-wire IDE cable will not work!
