win 98 networking
I have dsl which i am sharing through a hub, and 2 computers both running Win 98. I am attempting to set up file + printer sharing. unfortunately neither computer can "see" the other. I have the same set up @ my office, where i am running win XP pro. Unfortunately i have not dont file sharing in Win 98 for so long i have forgotten how to set it up propperly. I have been using Microsoft client. When the computers boot up i get " unable to find server to verify password" with an "ok" box. ! computer is a laptop, the other is a desk top ( not sure if this makes a difference). I matched IP addys on the tcp ip, but then i was unable to view any web pages, said i was behind a firewall. Any 1 out there have any ideas?

Ok...."sharing dsl thru a hub".
As far as I know, you cant usually just hook up two comps like that...because...you would need 2 IP addresses from the ISP....so unless you have that arranged with them, they might block your IP or block your machines blah blah.
Basically you need a nice cheap little home router...a router takes the one ISP from the dsl modem and turns it into as many internal IP addresses as you have comps.
As far as the other thing.....do you have "file and printer sharing" enabled?? right click "network neighborhood" / properties..and you'll see "file and printer sharing"....then reboot, go share some files..then look again and see if you can "see" the other machine in net neighborhood.
Also while you are in the net n'hood properties, you may need to change the primary logon to "client for msoft networks"

"I matched IP addys " hmmm, not sure what u mean there. You need to set em both to "obtain IP address automatically"....of course, as I say, your ISP may balk at that..with 2 machines....if so you may have to settle to having one be for internet.

My isp is aware that the computers are networked for share of dsl, and they have no problem with that. Infact they sold me the hub to do it. I had set up file and print shareing on both computers as well as client for ms, and set up files to share on both, but was unable to "see" the other computers. Only what i had set up to share on the computer i was on. As for " matching the ips ... i was told that i had to set my ip's simmilarly as follows ... 193.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 and 193.168.0.2 255.255.255.0 once this was done was when i suddenly became firewalled ...

hmmmm....well, since they know about it....have you called and asked them about it? Will they help you or are they gonna leave you on your own? lol
Id call em and tell em whats up, especially since they sold you the hub....they could probably get it stright in a few minutes.

do the comps both get the internet?
If so....fidn the ip address for each comp then see if you can "ping" each comp from the other
from a dos prompt "ping 192.168.1.1" (or whatever the IP is)

what is the router's IP addy? I'm asking that cause you say that one comptuer has the IP ending with a x.x.x.1 which is usually the router's IP addy.
Also, do you have TCP/IP installed? ALso, sometimes it helps to have NetBEUI installed, you don't NEED it, but sometimes windows seems to not wanna work without it for me. Also make sure that both PCs have the same Network stuff installed. When I try to connect computers where one has NetBEUI and the other doesn't they seem to not like each other for some reason.
