NEED INTERNET HELP!!!

Alright, this is for all you people who think you're hotshots with Microsoft. Here's the problem...it has me at ends wit, and I'm pretty good at figuring things out...

I've been playing some Sims and Starcraft and Diablo, and I noticed one day that I couldn't bring up the homepage and web! The strange thing is, I can still log online and use internet related games, such as battle.net and e-mail applications. After more experimenting, I discovered that the application extension in C:/Windows/System/SHODCLC.dll has a problem. I tried copy and pasting from various other computers but cannot replace it, because it is "under use" and by doing that I will mess up the Windows running. Obviously, the file SHODCLC.dll has other uses. Can somebody help me?!

*By the way, I don't want to reinstall becaus I have student files and stuff. I could transfer them on disk, but that would be hassle.

The SHODCLC.dll is used by Windows applications to add web, file, network and document browsing capabilities. As such, it is an integral part of windows. It should be in use when windows is running. That being said:
Have you tried starting in safe mode to replace this file? If that doesn't work, you can always replace it through DOS.

*EDIT* Here's a link that may help. I've not tried the patches located there myself, so use at your discretion:

Thanks so much. I'll start trying to fix it soon. In response:

Headband - I have installed internet explorer. That's when it started happening.

Bill in SD, USA - I have not scanned for spyware. What is spyware anyway and what does it do specifically?

Gettinbye - thanks so much for the information on SHODCLC.dll. I wasn't able to find anything. Also, thanks for the tips in regards to how to replace it.

Thank you all, and keep posting...the more help the better.

Spyware is bad software that most times gets installed without your knowledge when you install a program. It can do things like report your Internet usage patterns, installed software, Windows versions, what's on your hard drive... You get the idea, it's BAAAAD.

To scan for spyware use these two programs (one at a time) to scan for spyware.

Spybot: http://security.kolla.de

So that's what spyware is...those popups annoy me a lot... The only problem is that it might be too big of a file for me to transfer over, because, like said, I can't go on the "web".

By the way, is your icon from warhammer?
