Outlook 2003 <--> Zone Alarm PRO Problems???

I disabled Zone Alarm and Norton Antivirus and installed Outlook 2003.

Everything continued to work fine on my Outlook Express 2000 and my old standby, Netscape Communicator 4.8 and I enabled Norton Antivirus.

However no matter what I do, Outlook 2003 fails to find a network connection or so it claims. However when I try to send-receive mail it claims to have found the server but doesn't get a reply from it. YES, I've redone the account info several times and even used the variation of servers for Comcast.com to see if that makes a difference. I also removed my firewall/router and went directly to my cable modem.

I finally gave up and uninstalled the Outlook 2003 and all seemed to have returned to normal. THEN I discovered that I couldn't do a live update with Norton until I enabled Zone Alarm.

Has anybody else had a problem like this and solved it? I can't figure out how Zone Alarm figures into this nonsense when it's not even loading.

I ran into this once when i worked for bellsouth and it is directly related to zone alarm. I had to have the customer disable zonealarm and then outlook worked. I wish I could remember more but it was a long time ago. Good luck

Yup, I think it has something to do with ZA also but can't figure out the connection.

I intalled it with ZA disabled. Maybe I should try installing it with ZA ENABLED and see what happens.

I hate to uninstal and old favorite like ZA after all these years as it's served me well.

I've use ZAPro (for about 3 years), and have always installed apps with ZAP enabled.

Unfortunately, in your situation, you may have still problems trying an Outlook uninstall/reinstall with ZAP enabled... BUT I would still try that first.

If that doesn't work, then try to completely uninstall ZAP, using the Add/Remove control panel applet, followed by using Regedit to purge the Registry (after backing it up, of course) of all Zone Alarm keys and values traces. Make sure to keep a text copy of your ZAP key.

After uninstalling Outlook and ZAP, reinstall ZAP, then reinstall Outlook with ZAP enabled.

I had already uninstalled ZA Pro and Outlook 2003 installed fine without it there to muddy the waters.

I've used ZA for a year or two and then ZA Pro for a couple of years. Never had so much problem with it before.

I may decide to NOT reinstall it but I like the monitoring of stuff being sent back to the "mother ship" without my knowing it.

My hardware firewall seems to take care of incoming stuff.

Thanks for the advice.
