my notepad has turned into something else with a funny icon and i can't load it any more. i need it rather than wordpad in the very near future. i can't find any spyware or virus that's caused it, both ad-aware and AVG are up to date. would someone be willing to send me the notepad exe (from win XP) so i can replace this one? does anyone know what's happened?

Send a message via AIM to Siliconjunkie
You need to fix your pic or give some more detail. It's linking to a local file on your PC, so you can see it but nobody else can.

what happens when you go to the run box and type in "notepad"? (without the quotes)

What happens if you navigate to the C:\WINDOWS (whatever) directory and double-click on Notepad.exe?

If you delete 'notepad.exe' from C:\WINDOWS it will be replaced automatically from the one in your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dllcache directory. Even if somebody sent you there 'notepad.exe' it would be overwritten by the one in your \dllcache directory.

Do an 'SFC /PURGECACHE' and then 'SFC /SCANNOW' to see if it doesn't fix it.

You can try somebody else's 'notepad.exe', but it probably won't work.
