new motherboard, computer freezes
Help me please, anyone???? I installed a new motherboard. Same type as my old but without onboard video. I have attached one of my old hard drives with a multi boot system. (with partition magic). When I start the computer it appears to boot normally, (although I noticed it only recognizes the CPU as 750 MHZ when it is a 1.3 MHZ (yes this motherboard supports this 1.3 AMD CPU)) but it freezes when it is at the stage of loading W2000 Or W98 Whichever one I choose. I tried to boot to a W98 Boot disc but it won't recognize the boot disc. Now I am stumped as to how to get it to work. I cannot get into the OS or Boot from Boot disc!
What can I do, what is causing this??? Please help me.
Thank you in advance.
Cindy

the problem is the mobo drivers which are already loaded in the hard disk doesnt match to the new mobo. usually, a clean install of the OS will help.

You might be able to do a "repair" option using the windows 2000 Cd, and make the CDrom the first boot device.
Go through the steps like a new install, and select the current Windows 2000 to install to, and select "repair" or "write over current files" something like that.

I had previously tried to Boot to the W2000 Cd, so I could either repair or reload the OS, but it boots, loads the beginning files then when it goes to the part of loading W2000 it freezes. I then thought I would reformat the hard drive, but the computer won't even recognize the W98 Boot disc. This is where I am in a pickle can't even boot up to dos to use FDISK! What next .....I do not know.

make sure all your connections are fixed. check for any loose wires or cables. then try booting using the floppy drive and use fdisk. see if it will work.

go in your cmoc setup and make sure it recognizes the floppy as the first boot device (or atleast before the harddrive) also change the multiplier or the fsb to recognize the cpu at its correct speed

how do I change the multiplier. I have flashed my bios and can see that the post shows the new bios file in the top right hand corner, but it show only as an amd- duron (tm) it doesn't say a 1.3 ghz or 1300 mhz. Do I need to change the multiplier??? I have the fsb set to 100. Sorry but I do not know how to change the multiplier. I have downloaded the motherboard book, but cannot find where to do this.

I have checked all my connections, even replaced cables from this system I am on now, exchanged hard drives, video card too. Still it freezes at the same place, upon loading w2000 pro, whether from the hard drive, w2000 Cd or even when booting to safe mode. Always freezes at the same spot. I am unable to fdisk as when I boot from floppy boot disk it cannot load dos. Is there a way I can load the drivers for this motherboard without getting into the o/s?

hello cindym6,
after reading about your problem, i was wondering what king of motherboard you are using. you have mulitple situations going on and you may wanna try to get the correct settings on your board to recognize the cpu before you worry about the hard drive.
