Kids crossover codeweavers plugin worth it?

hey,

like alot of people here ive downloaded and messed around with most distros. i have the mplayer plugin with mozilla working, although not the greatest, it works, then sometimes not.

i was wondering if the steep 29.99 was worth it and how good it actually is. reason i bring up about all the distros is that theyre free so i dont think id feel so bad about spending money that was well worth it, but the question is still, is it...........

The question is 'do you have a legal copy of MS Windows?' and if you do then why not just run those programs in Windows?

I've heard all the arguments for wine, but in the end there are still a number of compatibility bugs that probably offset the potential benefits of running Windows programs under Linux.

Willie, my vote is for yes.

CMonster, i CANNOT type in spanish in open office or star office, the accented characters are a PAIN. And deadkeys are more of a pain to use.... So the crossover office suite was VERY worth it for me. Not to mention it runs photoshop, visio, etc. And I dont think he wants to boot up windows any time he wants to use plugins appropriately, nor do I

As far as the plugin goes, Jason (jkrohn) purchased it and it was worth every penny. It really does well with plugins, a big headache saver as plugins are a big beef of mine with the linux browsers. If you have the $30 to spend on it I would reccomend it.

Deadkeys were a pain for you? Even with the US-english w/deadkeys layout?

I dunno, I kinda like the way it works... ( ' + a = á )

The only thing I really thought crossover would be worth it for was quicktime support, which even with the right codecs in mplayer, I still can't get to work.

ummm, next question sir, thank you.

yeah like krohnjw posted, i dont always want to have to switch to windows for certain things but that IS one of the benefits of a 4 port switchbox i have here.
thanks for the input, ill have to figure if its worth it for me.

While I applaud the efforts by codeweavers -it is truly amazing- I discourage the use of Wine because I would like to see a Linux port of Photoshop, quicktime, games and the like. I would even welcome a Linux port of MS Office -but we all know that is not likely to ever happen.

Perhaps the question I should have asked is "Is it worth it to you?" For me the cost of the plugin is my monthly beer allowance -no big deal- but I have six legal copies of various MS Windows products... so a KVM switch would seem a better investment to me -but that's just me.

Like I said, I have heard the arguments for wine (I didn't say they weren't valid), and while the plugin works well enough I believe you will find that there are still a number of small annoyances -which wouldn't be there if the products were run on Windows (of course you often have to put up with far worse bugs when running Windows).

i got the pluggins a while back - they worked quite well. i used them to check out quicktime stuff. i must agree with Cmonster though, stuff needs to be native on linux.

CMonster: Me to. But in tryth Photoshop isn't going to get ported, nor Quicken or MS Office.
Wine is full of bugs, and I don't use it.
I'd say yes. If the program you need isn't on Linux and there's no open source alternative that you could use, get it.
The Codeweavers ones are meant to be good for apps. And having tried a demo of Crossover Office, it does run quite well.
