permissions in winxp

this is rather hard to explain but ill do my best.

i ran windows XP on my maxtor harddrive for a while. then my motherboard got fried cause i had a bad power supply.

now i have the maxtor set up as slave, and another harddrive as master. windows booting from master of course.

now, heres the kicker. i had a "download" folder on my desktop when i was using the maxtor.

when i try to access the files in that folder when booted from the master drive (i cant boot from the maxtor because grub is broken and i deleted all teh files except that folder because i needed storage space), it says access denied.

how do i solve this problem?

Can you get to it in safe mode?

so you had a dual boot on the maxtor that was originally the master? if it was windows on the maxtor and you are SURE the folder is still there why not just (if you are copying to a windows drive) use a win98 boot disk(fat 32 only, unless you use ntfsdos) anc copy the folder over? the desktop directory will be
C:\documents and settings\your user name\desktop\download

I've had this problem before. Go into safe mode and login as the administrator. Right click on the folder that you don't have access to and there should be a tab that says security. From that tab, there should be some option (I think in the advanced button) where you can take ownership of the folder. Do that.
