Bad CPU's?

Ok I build a pc a few months ago. ASUS A7V8X, AMD XP 1800, WD 80 GB HDD, Raedon 9600 Pro, Now on first boot up pc runs fine for like 4 hours. I loaded up the PC and drove it to Florida to give it to my mother. I get there ASUS voice reporter says "System failed CPU test". I messed with it for hours to no avail. I load it back up drive it back to Michigan. I send CPU to AMD. They send it back saying it is fine. I install it in a different PC same result. I send it back to AMD. THIS time they say it is bad and they will send me a new one. That was 2 months ago, still no cpu. Ok today I am out shopping a local store has a decent deal ok XP 2400's I say ok, I pick one up bring it back throw it in and I get "system failed CPU test. WTH am I just getting some bad luck or is something not hooked up right that is frying my CPU's? I am lost, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Wolf

Tell us a bit about how you installed the CPU, heatsink and fan assy.

What brand heatsink?..did it have a thermal pad attached?..did you remove it?..did you apply a thermal heatsink grease?..did you connect the heatsink fan to the motherboard?

Its very difficult to help someone without seeing their setup and knowing what they did.

Send a message via Yahoo to Dax_Brandy
Consider also the possibility that the mobo may be defective too. and beforehand, you may check what bovon had ask to look at.

I installed the CPU with stock HS/Fan and thermal pad that came with it. I took CPU back to the store I got it from they said it was fine. They told me either a bios flash was needed or MB is bad

Hmmm, well clutching at straws now. I have not checked out your ASUS A7V8X..and am not familiar with it. Are you sure it is good for the XP 2400?..if not, that would certainly be a reason for it to not pass the test..because the board is not recognizing it.

If you are sure the board and CPU are compatible, can you take the board out of the case, put only one stick of RAM, the CPU/HSF in it, connect the PSU and video card to a monitor..and thats all..no drives, no keyboard..no nothing other than what I mentioned..place the board on a book of some kind..out of the case... I use a phone book usually (handy to me at the work bench) or some sturdy cardboard setup..power it on and see if you can get it to POST that way...

Also, make sure the power supply is rated for the application - and also that the mobo is mounted and grounded properly.

Do you have better house wiring than your mom? (i.e. you have grounded outlets but she doesn't - age of house etc.)

It could be that the power supply can handle the power variances at your house but not hers. The extra stress on the power supply at moms house may run it out of tolerance for the CPU and mobo your running. This may make the mobo report a bad CPU when it is really the power supply that is having the problem.

The standard power supply that came with the case may not be enough.

Just an idea....I hope this helps

note that this mobo only supports processors with a FSB of 266/200, make shure that the processsor you have tryed works in that range, also check the Vcore you need for that processor
