Kids how would i go about oc my P3??

Hi I'm a noob to overclocking, i have never done it before and so i was wondering how i would go about overclocking my P3 933 mhz processor?
My system specs are as follows:

Abit VH6T motherboard w/ integrated sound

Pentium III 933 mhz

128 mb PC-100 SDRAM (soon to be upgraded!)

32 mb tnt-2 agp card (considering upgrade, but this system is not really a gaming machine so i doubt if i really need it.)

I would like to get the most out of my PIII and am hoping for over 1 ghz. I have heard that the most you can overclock these processors is 1100mhz because the coppermine core can't go any higher? i wouldn't know really though as i am new to this...
so what is needed for this... any BIOS tweaking? or do i need a program. any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks in advance,
RB

The basic premise is that you are going to increase the fsb.

Since you have the famous Abit "softmenu"..it should be pretty easy...cuz you probably have 1mhz steps for the fsb...plus there probably arent any jumpers involved. So you first take it and change it to, say, 135mhz...which should put you at 947mhz

So that is the basic premise...BUT you have to remember when you turn up the fsb like that, you are also revving up the ram and the pci cards and the video card...soooooo a lot of it depends on the options in your bios as far as "dividers" and things like that....the more options it gives you the better...that way you can push the fsb but keep using a different "divider" to keep the pci clock and ram clock to workable speeds.

As you push the fsb, at some point it wont boot..so that means something is failing...could be the memory, could be vid card, could be a pci card, could be cpu....so you have to be a detective....or it could boot but not post into windows all the way etc. At that point you COULD bump up the cpu voltage, or ram voltage or video voltage etc....that gives you more fsb headroom, but also makes more heat.

You have a headstart cuz Abit is one of the best overclocking boards due to their stability plus the nice Bios.
Best thing to do is look for some reviews of that board...cuz they almost always do some overclocking in the review.

Those 133 mhz PIII's arnt so overclockable, and your mb may not have the devisors to keep your other components near spec being of an older design, its possible to get alittle more out of it but not much...

hmmm..that board accepts tualatin processors.....yummy.

You could get a nice tualitan 1.2g to 1.4g celly to play with for like $40...not sure how great they are at oc'ing....but probably pretty good.

In agreement on the tualtatin. It's listed as a celeron, but has the same cache as the PIIIs. It's cheap and effective. I got mine from ebay, but I'm sure you could find one on pricewatch somewhere.

ok thanks for all that help guys now i think i will oc my pc with all that advice... as for the tualatin i will look into that too. 1.4 ghz sounds a lot better than 933mhz lol. on the bios i can select my processor speed.. it goes up to 1.53 ghz or so... does this mean i can whack a 1.53 ghz processor in my board??? thanks again for the help.

rb

PS... i have aquired a spare celeron 1.1 ghz... it has a 100mhz fsb... is this any better than the p3 933mhz with 133fsb??

Any easier to overclock?
