Invalid system disk Replace and strike any key

I started up win98 with a new ps/2 mouse but the computer didn't automatically recognize it, so I plugged in a serial mouse and went into "add new hardware", and then plugged the ps/2 mouse back in. I pressed enter to make the pc detect new plug and play hardware, and it locked up. So I reset the computer and after it searches the IDE for a boot record it finds one, and then it searches the floppy for one and it says not found, just like normal, but then it says "Invalid system disk. replace and strike any key when ready" and no matter what I do, it won't load past that. pressing any key won't do anything. inserting a boot disk won't do anything. I tried changing the boot sequence and nothing happened. no matter what I try, It won't boot up.

And I also noticed something about the error message that might help. in a normal boot when you put in a floppy it say"Non system disk or disk error. Replace and strike any key", but whenever I try to boot it says " Invalid system disk. replace and strike any key when ready", which is a different error message, even when there is no disk in or a boot disk. Can Somebody help me with this???

Welcome!

Unlike USB, legacy keyboard and mouse ports are not made for "hot" plugging something while the computer is running.

Chances are you zapped something important.

It actually was a ps/2 mouse with a serial adaptor, and I don't think I fried anything, cuz when I hit delete and run CMOS setup at the boot, the mouse still works in there.
