Why can`t I OC with a Maxtor HD

Hi, I have tried to OC my box a few times in the past but all attempts have resulted in the system file getting corrupt and having to reinstall XP.

So I thought I would have another go with my old 10Gb Seagate drive. I got upto 1700Mhz on my 1800+ Athlon with a bus of 147. I was able to run Quake demo and get 184 fps (146@1533)

Now if I put my Maxtor in and OC I get the error and have to reinstall. I can`t seem to run my Samsung mem other than SPD as I have no volt setting in my bios.

So are Maxtor drives bad for OC`ing?

Your Maxtor is probably sensitive to the PCI bus being OC'd. This is actually not uncommon as far as OC'ing goes.

That may make me buy Seagate drives in the future I think.

But why can`t I run my mem other than SPD.

Does the motherboard support setting the PCI/AGP dividers?
What board is it?
Is your chip unlocked, and does the board support multiplier adjustment/are you willing to solder jumpers to it?
If the motherboard will let you, try raising the FSB to 166, where the higher dividers should kick in, for example, I can't run my system at 165mhz, but it will run fine at 175. See how it goes. You'll get a better boost out of that anyway.

yes. MAXTORs are ESPECIALLY sensitive to pci oclocking. Anything like 38mhz and up is iffy with them. Mine would stop at 40mhz then all errors at 41mhz. LOL. Was a maxtor 40gig single platter ata100 drive 2mb cache. WD 800jbl (80gig 8mb cache 2 platters) I have now just dont mind it as much. But now with my Nf2 and pci/agp bus lock it doesnt really matter. You must have a via or sis chipset.

I can`t see any pci/agp dividers its an Asus A7V333, it won`t post at 166, don`t think my Athlon 1800 will take 1900Mhz+

I think the pci was only 34 or 35 and I was getting problems with my system, I couldn`t anywhere near 40 with the Maxtor. Yes its Via, but when I can afford it I will go with NF2. I thought it was my 512Mb Samsung mem that was stopping it but I have read some reviews that say the Samsung is a good overclocker.

Samsung is really good oclocking chips. I myself have ddr400 samsung and it rocks. It would be the last thing I'd suspect of limiting you. Id say that HDD must just be WAY touchy!

Oh well its a standard system for me while I have a Maxtor drive. I may have a another go at OC`ing if I do a reinstall on the Maxtor.

My experience so far is Seagate and IBM/Hitachi seem to do okay handling OC's. I've had Seagate drives up to 200mHz on a KT333 system (that's 40mHz at the PCI bus). I've been running IBM drives at (up to) 180mHz (36Mhz at PCI) for about two years straight now. Note: make sure you've got good cooling and the drives don't get too warm.

I`m going to leave it for now, as if I do OC all I get is the system file is missing or corrupt. And I`m not planning on installing windows again soon.

As for cooling I have 2 fans sucking air in at the front under between my 2 HD`s, and I got rid of my Dragon Orb 3 (Which was noisey)
