I once knew somebody who had audio equipment for his computer, including a mixing board.

does anybody know where i can learn about these things, my next computer is going to be media-editing oriented, and im wondering if its worth adding to what im getting, and if so, what to look for. (prefferably no more then $150)

thanks,
TeRG

If you're looking for a DJ type mixer I have a 19" MTX I can let go for $50+shipping.

i've got a mixer setup with my comp so i'll say a few things. the thing they are good for is routing multiple sound sources at once through a computer. like if you want to do a recording of a band with all instruments miced at once then it would be good. or also if you have everything running through your tv including cd player, tv, dvd player, etc and want them all to work at the same time.

what type of media editing are you going to be doing? this might also affect whether or not you need one. You prolly could find a decent mixer for around $200 on ebay. and of course there is cubkid's mixer if you are looking specifically for a DJ mixer.

As for how to learn this stuff my advice is to find someone who already knows what they are doing and learn from them, and of course we're here too. i learned all about pro audio by working with others and just getting my hands dirty. i did some googling but didn't really find any good tutorials

EDIT: as for what to look for there are several things. first of all, the more channels the better. also make sure to get a name brand (as in anything). mackie makes very good low budget mixers, as does yamaha. Outputs are just as important. You want at least two main outputs and two aux outputs. (personally i prefer 2 mains and 6 auxs).

What Originel said.

And you can find decent entry-level mixers for under $100. I have an Alto S8. 4 Mono Channels with Mic(XLR)/Line ins, two stereo line in channels (one of them with XLR mic in). I like it alot.

I use mine to record music on my PC, one channel at the time, so having many channels isn't that important to me.
