NTLDR/NTKRNLMP.EXE problem

Hi, I'm having touble trying to load my OS onto a clean formatted HDD.

When I boot up, my PC reads from the floppy boot disc and checks my hardware config then asks for disc 2 (of 6), I load disc 2 and get "NTKRNLMP.EXE is missing, error code 7" and can't get any further. So I try to load XP pro from CD ROM and get "NTLDR is missing" and can't get any further.
I have read that either of these could be caused by memory faults but if my RAM was faulty I wouldn't be able to use the PC at all, I am using the same PC now with a different HDD and same OS.

How can I get round this ?

Can I use one copy of Win XP pro on this HDD to load a diferent copy of XP Pro onto another drive ie. in Windows ?

ABIT AT7MAX2, AMD Athlon XP 2600+ thourorbred core, XP pro, DDR 400 1Gb. Maxtor Diamond Max 9

Your first error is probably just from bad media. Try creating the disks again.

Your second error is probably because it's not set to boot from CD-ROM First in your BIOS. Check and make sure it is.

You could have bad RAM and everything still seem to work okay. Memtest86 is a good RAM tester.

And if I understand your question about using a copy on a HDD to load it onto another, No, you'd have to have a copy of the XP CD on the HDD to load it.

Hi EvilRick, thanks for your response.

First the discs worked fine two days ago they were newly created then. But I will try to create new ones.

Second I have set it to boot from FDD first then changed to boot from CD-ROM (now back to FDD).

I will try Memtest again thanks for the reminder.

I will copy the XP cd to HDD and try to load it from there cheers.

You just need to copy the "I386" folder to your HDD to install it.

So just copying the i386 folder to a blank HDD will solve the problem ?

I haven't tried this yet because I haven't had the time to strip my PC and re-install the second HDD etc as it has been in use and also because I am a little doubtful of it's success.

Anyone else got a better idea or at least a bit more information on copying the i386 folder to a blank HDD ?

Well I can now confirm that copying the i386 folder to a balnk formatted hard drive does not solve the problem (unfortunately).

I still get the message ;
"ntkrnlmp.exe could not be found and setup cannot continue, error code 7)

Any more suggestions welcome.

Memtest86 failed to find any problems with RAM.

Will try to make new boot disks next.

AV scan of boot discs and a full re-make of boot disc set solved the problem.
