40X Supported but burn only at 24X?

I have NEC NR-9100A which is supose to write at 40X but with the latest Nero and Easy CD Creator 6, I can only select at 24X. I am just trying to burn regular data. The CD-R that I bought also says it supports 48X. But why can't I still?

Please, don't give me answers like "Maybe the drive is dying..." I'd really appreciate a really helpful answer. Thanks.

Windows XP Pro SP1
Athlon XP 2100+ 1.73 GHZ
512 MB RAM

Sometimes it is the media...this has happened to me.

I have a Memorex 100cd spool. When I burn a CD with Nero 6, I can only burn at 24x yet my Plextor is rated at 40/12/40.

But the media is probably old, that's why.

If the cd's are of a generic brand, go and get some quality brand blank cds (TDK, Maxell for example)

Stuff like GQ bought from Fry's may be rated at 48x yet burn at 24x D:

Does your software recognize the brand and model of the drive correctly? If not go to the website for the software and try to d/l a file that upgrades the program to all the latest drives. I use NTI CD Maker and they have a file called cdrw32.bdb that does this. About every month or so they put out a new file.

It's not generic, it is Memorex 48X. I've bought that GQ CD at Fry's before also since it was on sale like 100 pack for $14 or so. I remember burning at 40X with those CD's before. I'm pretty sure the problem isn't the CD .

Weird cause like I said earlier I also use Memorex 40x...

Maybe its Nero?
The Roxio Easy CD Creator version that came with my Plextor burned at 40x so my othe guess could be wrong.

Any burner depends on reflectivity of the media to burn. I suspect if the CD's are not really good quality, the burner must slow down to some speed where the media can be successfully read and burned.

A few years ago when home burners were brand new, many people were having hair pulling sessions trying to find which brand of CDR their burner would burn to. Quality has improved a lot since then, and I rarely read of certain disks that a particular burner will not burn..but there may be some that the burner cannot burn at full speed.

To prove this theory, go buy a few top quality disks..premium disks...memorex was not considered quality 2 or 3 years ago... none of the bulk CD's that we buy in discount stores are really considered quality.

Well like I said, it's not the CD-R or how the cable is connected or the drive dying...

Is there something I have to update such as drivers?
Also wondering if this may be necessary... http://support.ap.dell.com/ap/en/fil...ia=NEC%209100A

trying updating the version of your burning software and getting new cdrs... these are the ONLY two things that will cause burning slower than what the drives capable of doing.

I've had the label on the media lie about the speed. It seems to me the worst offenders are the MAJOR brand that's on sale w/rebate. They don't burn at the listed speed and they don't give me my rebate. Hey, i't just my experience.

I just stick to good ol' generic. It seems the stuff that's just on no rebate sale burns at the speed listed or relatively near there.
