Kids Setup Question: RAID as IDE on KT3 Ultra ARU

Hello,
I was wondering if it is possible to have this setup:

IDE-0:
Maxtor 40GB (Master)
WD 120GB (Slave)

IDE-1:
Toshiba 16x DVD (Master)
LG 4X DVD-RW (Slave)

I have two onboard RAID connectors, can I connect a LG 48X CD-RW to one of those?
If it is possible, would it be optimal to stick a CD-RW in there, or one of my Hard drives?

Also, can I have more than one ide device attached to the same RAID connector (master/slave setup)?

My motherboard uses a Promise 20276 RAID controller on board.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

1) NO, you do not connect optical devices to RAID ports.

2) Hard drives go on RAID ports.

3) Yes, your RAID ports can act the same as standard IDE ports...in fact, most people use them that way allowing for individualized ports for your devices. (Try to keep your DVD-RW as master on its own port)

BTW, Welcome to TechIMO!!!

i used to have a similar setup..

IDE0
Hard Drive(M)
CDRW(S)

IDE1
DVDRW(M)
Hard Drive(S)

Raid (Channel 1)
Hard Drive(M)
Hard Drive(S)

Raid (Channel 2)
Hard Drive(M)
Hard Drive(S)

that seemed to work fine, didnt use any Raid Arrays, just used em as simple drives

Not to disagree w/ Martoch, but if you're not using your RAID connectors in an array, it won't hurt to have optical drives connected to them. Not setup as an array, they act as normal IDE connectors.

Good point Rick, but it's good general practice to keep them on the normal IDE ports...not disagreeing with you either, just exemplifying what you said.

thanks for all the input! wow u guys are fast!

another question: right now I have disabled the RAID on my BIOS. Do I have to enable it in order to use the RAID ports as IDE?
Thanks again and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Try it and see. It's a good question either way.

I would say w/ it disabled, it just bypasses the RAID BIOS. W/ it off, see if the drive(s) show up in Device Manager or Disk Management, depending on OS.
