file splitter and joiner

ok so I want to back up my dvd's I create an image that is 7-8 gigs now is there a program that I can use to split this up to at least 4.7gigs to put on 2 dvd's and when I put it back on the computer join them to the one image. I have already cracked(broke) one of my dvd that I have saved but I have it on my computer and If I need to reformat I need to temperarly transfer it to these disks then put it back when done. I would like to keep it in one so when the dual layer comes out I can create the single dvd instead on the 2 dvd's.

What are you using to create your "backup" image?

I did a quick (not thorough) search, and found The File Splitter v1.3, a freeware splitter/joiner program.

The problem with many file splitting/joining utilities is that they don't support huge files (over 2gb or 4gb..), but this one specifically states it can split files over "9 billion gigabytes"

Re: The File Splitter v1.3 do you need the program installed on the machine where you are performing the recreation of the original file? Or can you copy all the parts to any machine and it is self-joining?

If memory servers correct (and if the File Splitter is as old as I think it is), you DO NOT need File Splitter to join them back up. I think it creates a bunch of .bat files to recreate the file. But, it's been awhile and I could be wrong.

EDIT - I just went and looked, now it makes a bunch of .exe's and you DO NOT need File Splitter on the machine to join them back up.

It actually makes a ".exe" file for you. you just need that .exe file to join them together again.

However,... I *think* you could join them manually. (I don't see why you couldnt..). You can join 2 files manually by using the following syntax:

copy C:\FilePiece1.img + C:\FilePiece2.img C:\OneBigFile.img

(The above command will join the two 'FilePieceX.img' files into one large file called 'OneBigFile.img')

You'll want to test this out on your machine to make sure it works.

OK, Thanks. I've used a program called File Shredder 3.02 [by Kazusoft] in the past. But I didn't know if it would work on today's huge files as I've had it for several years.

pkzip will do this too, just turn off compression and tell it to split into x parts.

Just used "File Splitter" for the first time and was surpised how well and easy the program performed.

Thought I'd pass it on.

winrar will let you do this also (by setting the max size of each part). then all you need is any zip program (if you save it to a zip file). winzip probably will too.
