Being a novice, it is rather difficult for me to
understand even the basic of this instructions.

I have an audio video DVD/VCR combination device. My
goal is to product DVD's from the VCR cassettes.

If you would walk me through the procedures one step at a
time, I would be most appreciative.

You want play a DVD and record on VCR, or play on VCR and burn on DVD?

If it's the former, I'd suspect your DVD player is protected by Macrovision, which means you would not be able to record from it. Some DVD players can have the Macrovision disabled if you flash them with a hacked BIOS. www.dvdrhelp.com might be able to help you there.

Best method with a PC is to have a capture card to capture from a VHS then burn to the DVD. If you have a DVD player that can record DVDs then you should be able to folow the directions in the manual.
