admin help

I have two separate accounts one power user the other admin, I use power user to get on net and other things.
When I try to download files it makes me save only in my documents , I don't have admin privileges it says to save anywhere else, how can I change this?

Thks

What's the exact text of the error?

Does it save to your desktop?

I believe it should *always* let you save anywhere under this folder (including subfolders):
C:\Documents and Settings\*YOUR NAME*\

Have you messed with the [security] tab on any folders/drives, etc?

You're sure the user is a power user? Double check by going to:
Start Menu -> Run... -> control userpasswords2

In this 'User Accounts' box, view the properties on the user in question, and on the [Group Membership] tab, the (x) Other [Power Users] option should be selected.

I checked it says power user and I can only save to the documents I haven't screwed around with anything else.
Now how do I go about giving myself privileges on the other account?
Where do I start?

I'd still like to see the exact error if possible.

If you'd like to modify the security of the folders anyway...

I hesitate to give this info. Take it with a warning... you can really mess things up if you mess up Security settings!

Open up Windows Explorer. On the Tools menu, choose Folder Options... . On the [View] tab, scroll all the way to the bottom of the list, and uncheck [ ] Use simple file sharing. That is a ONE TIME action, which will allow you to see a [Security] tab on all your folders/files.

Now, Right-Click a folder you wish to give access to, and choose Sharing and Security.... On the Security tab, you should see the account (power user) listed. If you click on it, you can use the checkboxes below to allow [x] Modify permissions. (Never touch Deny permissions unless you know what you are doing.)

Please be careful! If you incorrectly set the wrong permissions, you can lock yourself out of your own computer. Never mess with system/windows folders or the root (hard drive itself).

For future reference, you might find these articles helpful:

The exact error is "You do not have permission to save in this directory.See the administrator to obtain permission. Would you like to save in my documents instead?

I took off simple file sharing but do not see any security options when I right click a file.

Alright...
(1) You aren't trying to save to a CD are you?
(2) You wont get that 'security' option when you right click a file. My apologies. The security tab can be found when you right-click and choose Properties.

Maybe the user needs 'ownership' of the folders you are trying to save to:

Right click a folder that you cant seem to save to, and click Properties. On the [Security] tab, click [Advanced...] button.

From here, click the [Owner] tab, and the current owner should be listed at the top. If you change the owner, it might work.
(Again, be careful!)

Happy new year!

Make sure you don't go and 'take ownership' of everything you see, just because you can. Only 'take ownership' of stuff you need to get to. If you start taking ownership of everything, then other accounts on your computer may start to have the same problem.

I unfortunately learn a lot by messing around with stuff I shouldn't. I screw up badly, and then learn from my lesson. Curiosity killed the cat. Thankfully a cat has 9 lives. I must have used up 2392 lives so far.

I also try to suggest things you should *not* do, because I probably have done them before, and learned my lesson.

Ironically, reading other posts at TechIMO is one of the best learning experiences. By reading how someone solved a problem, you can learn a lot.

Google is your best friend. If you've ever wondered how/why something works, or want to know how to fix it... chances are that someone else has already thought the same thing, and solved the problem already or written up some info about it.
