Kids P4 2.6 OC what is Safe???

I have a
P4 2.6 w/ 800 FSB (stock Fan)
P4P800 deluxe ASUS MoBo

My question is using the ASUS Bios what percentage is safe on a stock fan? 5%? 10%? 20%? 30%? Is it better to use the ASUS preset percentages or would going in manually and adjusting the setting work better. I have the Intel fan that came with the CPU and I was concerned with the temps that would result from pushing it up. Any help would be appreciated.

I've heard the "intelligent" overclocks arent necesarily all that smart. I have that motherboard but I've never really messed around overclocking with it. Prolly want to simply move the fsb up slowly and if it becomes unstable try upping the voltages a little. Theres definately some other members who can help you more with it

I've heard of 2.4s being overclocked stable to 3.0 on stock cooling and still stable, so id say 20% would definately be feasilbe..

And welcome to techimo

You cant hurt it, it will throttle itself or not post if you are too far out of spec, the retail cooler works quite well by the way, it speeds itself up as the temps rise...

Yeah, with a P4 the worst that can happen is it will slow the chip down. You probably could kill it by overvolting it, IDK. So long as you're not silly it won't come to any harm, and even then.
Fans with temp sensors built in should be left alone. Those boards can go screwy sometimes, and its best just to disable them to be safe.

TTT

Has anyone used a MoBo's percentage settings all while using their stock fan?

I heard the 2.6 P4 was an overpriced and over-rated processor. Is that why you are trying to overclock it? Trying to get a little more value out of your machine?

Set your overclocks manually
percentages can be dangerous!
imagine for a p4 3Ghz - 20% is 600Mhz! without insane cooling your machine is not even going to boot.

You need to know the basics of overclocking before u start meddling with the BIOS settings.
when the FSB goes up, you have to see if your memory can handle the higher FSB, else you would have to use a divider like 5:4 or 3:2. Don't forget to lock your AGP / PCI bus as well.
your Vcore may also have to be raised slightly to maintain stability.

Nothing special, no jumping thru hoops, no expensive parts...
