56k to 56k

2 computers with 56k modems to connect with each other in the same city using something like pc anywere. Now an est. how long to you think it will take to transfer a 100mb file from one computer to another. Also If I have one phone line is there an option were the computer will answer if it is only a computer on the other end,I don't want it to think a computer when it is you or me. Been a while since I used a dial device fot my pc's.

how long? OMG. Like at least 2 days.

You'd be better of burning a CD and running it over to other guy.

yes defintely i know how slow dialup is (i have 26.4k connection) a 100mb file will take a very long time especially since it's from dialup to dialup. if you dont have a cdrw i'd suggest to just go out and get one (i'd suggest a liteon one) since they're only like $30.
another option might be taking one of the computers to the location of the other and networking them via crossover cable or over a network (if the one computer is on one already)

2 days? it wouldnt be THAT bad, but still unbearably slow.

You could setup an ftp server (not too hard to do if you dont have firewall conflicts)... and if you can upload on the one computer at 33kbps... thats roughly 4.2K/sec... which would take about 6.6 hours... so conservative estimate lets called it 8 hours... But I agree..... just burn the darn thing to a CD. heck you could write it to 70 floppy disks quicker =)

Best case, you can estimate about 300k per min (5kps).
That makes 333 min (about 5.5 hours) for 100 meg.
This is assuming a good, consistant connection with no disconnects.

**Edit**
Couple posts came in while I was calcing my figures...
VHockey has is more correct. I figured it by a 53k connection on both ends, but that isn't possible. Best two 56k modems can do is 33k...

But you must also realize that the longer 56k is connected, the slower it gets. The more errors per channel, the less channels you have, so it gets slower over time. Have you ever dealt with a 56k proxy about 10 years ago? Those had this kind of problem all the time

I'll lower my expectation to 36hrs

Point made: get a CD Burner.

Well, I used to download on my 56k overnight... it maintained speed quite well

regardless... 56k uploading that size file is just kinda crazy...

Actually, I'd be interested to see if it really works. He might set a world record for largest file transfered over slowest line

Jokes aside, I still would like to see it done.
