Wrong IP address after changing wireless networks

I have tried to search, but I don't know enough about this stuff to know what to search for. I am running win 2000 on a laptop with a Linksys wireless card. I have a home wireless network set up with a Motorolla surfboard cable modem and a microsoft wireless router/access point. My company runs a wireless network with a lynksys router/AP. When I set up my home network everything was working fine, and when I went to work my computer was able to change over to that network without any problems. Now when I went back to my home network I can't connect to the internet. I didn't change anything and it says I'm getting 100% signal, it acts like I'm connected to my router, but not the internet. I've got a feeling it is not pulling the "new" IP address for my home network, but I don't know how to make it work. I tried all the "ipconfig /release" and "ipconfig /renew" but none of that works. DHCP is enabled but it's still not working. Sorry for the n00b question, any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum!

not my area of expertise....have you tried just powering down the router?

When you do the ipconfig/release / renew etc..what does it tell you? does it give you an ip or does it give you a 169.254.x.x ip?

I am sure this is a very basic thing because surely lots of people use laptops like this...at home and work...

possibly you need to setup two user accounts..one for work, one for home..with the two different wireless network accounts etc.

I am sure someone else on the forum can tell us exactly whats up.

Welcome

yeah, damn wireless sometimes is flaky, i would try what was suggested and reset the router and cable modem. did you have to change any settings like the workgroup or domain name and forgot to change it back? well if youre using dhcp in both places that might not matter anyway now come to think of it.

I have tried the "microsoft fix" of turning everything off then on again, that didn't seem to work. When I do an ipconfig /all in my home network it gives me an ip of 169.254.x.x for the wireless card. I don't know where it gets that ip, but it's not right. Can I manually enter the ip of my router/ap somewhere? I've tried microsoft tech support, but all that gets me is 30 min. of listening to bad music while on hold. Thanks for all the help, I'm just afraid that if I fix it I won't know what the heck I did, that's how most of my computer issues go.

ok, if its get a 169.254 etc Ip that is called an 'apipa'..."automatic privare ip addressing"..it gives you that when it cant see a dhcp server...that way if you have a lan and the router dies at least the comps all get a 169.254 ip so they can see each other.

soooo, your issue is its not seeing the dhcp..not seeing the router....can you "ping" the router?? usually "ping 192.168.0.1"

Obviously your not going to be able to ping a 192.168.x.x /24 if your getting the windows default ip scheme, the 169.254.x.x. Sounds like, perhaps, your company may have pushed out a wep key or some other kind of authentication mechanism to your card. You might try removing the driver of the card in the device manager, rebooting and letting windows pick it up again. Still may be in there. You can look around at your NIC's settings to see if you do in fact have a WEP key enabled, or WEP enabled period.
