Kids Changing My IP Address?

Hello,

Simple question, how can I change my IP?

Long story short, my IP has been publicly displayed on a certain forum, and I believe my IP has had several hack attempts against it.

So, how can I change it? Do I need to use an "ipconfig" command prompt?

Anyways, an explanation would be great!

Thanks a lot.

do you have dial up or broadband?

If its dial up it probably changes everytime anyway.

the answer to this isn't so clear.

well, the sure-fire way to do it would be to speak to your ISP and they will do this for you.

depending on how the ISP configures their end, part of the problem is that your cable/dsl modem plays a part in renewing your IP. a "ipconfig /release" by itself isn't going to be enough in most cases. powering down the modem doesn't always work (i've experimented myself) and if you have to leave it off for a very long time, it is a great inconvenience.

in any event, if you are running a secure and properly configured firewall on your PC, you have little to fear. the worst they could do would be a packet storm which is realy more of a nuisance than a security risk.

talk to your isp and explain the story to them. they should be willing to help.

In reference to the link posted by Army2001- the character "Snatch" sounds like a real winner. I do have to say that I was laughing out loud after reading him, especially the part "...digital cable always fux up..." which is true enough and the reason why I switched to D-TV and never looked back.
