updating firmware on DVD burner

NEC 1300a (OEM from Newegg) came at v1.08 and I'm having problems burning Ritek discs at 4x (2x works with Nero just fine). I'm about to upgrade to official v1.09 because it addresses this issue (many RIteks now supported)... but want to backup v1.08 firmware before I do it.

I can't seem to find instructions on backing up the firmware, even on Herrie's site. I got the official firmware from his site too. Only windows updater was found (what about DOS?). Heard horror stories after updating, so I want to be sure I can back out if needed.

Thanks
