Windows XP install messed up..

So I tried to install Windows XP over Windows XP... Actually, what I was trying to do was repair the system files from the disk. Anyway... The install went bad and said I couldn't finish so I hit F8 or whatever to exit the install, removed the CD from my hard drive and rebooted.

Main problem: Now every single time I boot up my computer I get that stupid screen that asks me if I want to enter Windows Setup or Windows XP Home Edition giving me 5 seconds to decide. This is very very annoying for me.

Side problem: When I scroll webpages with my mouse now it takes years and doesn't look right... It looks like the screen is shifting instead of actually scrolling.

Things I've tried already: Spyware removal... Ha. Virus detection... Ha. Finishing the windows install again? No go.

Please help.

Waited all day got 4 views and 0 replies...

What happened to the 20 replies to the 'any question asked in the first 15 minutes' TechIMO that I was so fond of?

a lot of it depends on when you post..certain times of the day..not many peeps are on..once it goes off the first screen....its gone, lol.

Is a format and reinstall an option? cuz that is one option that fixes everything, lol.

Main Problem: edit c:\boot.ini and remove the line for the setup one

Not sure about the side problem...

Not sure if this will help, but worth a try

Right click on My Computer and chose Properties

Go to Advanced/Startup and Recovery

Click on Edit and you can now change the boot file.

I guess you will see two entries. Delete the Setup Entry and make sure the default is directing on your standard windows.

Do not forget to save.

Hope this helps.

Alright! Well, at least it's going somewhere
I edited my boot.ini file and now it still gives me 2 options but it will probably be easy to fix from this point..

It gives me:

Windows XP Home Edition
windows (default)

Here is a copy of exactly what I have in my boot.ini file..

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
