more wireless questions

ok just set up a wireless G network using a linksys router and linksys wireless card. 2 pc's, both using windows xp home and i have a cable modem. setup seemed pretty easy and it seems to be working okay. i was just wondering a couple things. one--when i put in the cd that came with the router, there is a place to click on to setup the network. when i click on this it says it cannot detect my router and to make sure the network is set up right. like i said everything seems to be working okay but i was curious why it would say this. second thing is about WEP. right now i dont have it enabled. am i suppose to use 64bit or 128? when i tried it i wasn't able to get my pc connected to the network. was i doing something wrong? i think it was only connecting to the network when i didnt have WEP enabled. i know i need it for security though. help

Send a message via AIM to Siliconjunkie
If 128 is an option for the router and the cards, use it. The key will be longer, but much more secure.

Also, make sure you turn on mac address filtering.

FYI.... I basically was setting up the same type of network.....Linksys Wireless G router, Linksys Wireless G game adaptor(For Playstation 2). Running Windows XP Pro and cable modem connection using the Motorola Surfboard.

Connected everything together, powered up and placed install CD in drive. Just as the install was about to reach 100% , a window popped up saying " internet connection not found."

I tried again checked all connections placed CD in only to get the same message.

At this point I called Linksys support. I explain the problem. The tech support told me they have been getting many calls about the install CD not detecting a connection or the router.

In a few minutes he helped me manually install the router and game adaptor.

So the problem seems to lie with their install CD.

The 24 bit IV is cracked so 104 bit WEP is only marginally more secure than 40 bit, however if you don't take too big a performance hit you might as well use 128 bit WEP. Pretty easy thing to do. Create a key on your router's admin interface and enter in on the client.
