Memory Question

HI Guys and Gals,

Have a simple question for you.

Is it okay to mix two types of memory chips?
Right now I got a Kingston 256mb in my laptop and Im looking to add another 256 into it.

Crucial is cheaper than kingston so im wondering if it okay to mix crucial and kingston together?

TIA

If both work in your comp they should work together.
If one is slower they will both work at the slow speed.

which brings up another question:
is it better to work at twice the ram at slower speeds, or original quantity at faster speed?

Less RAM means HD access and the slowest RAM is faster than any HD

That infomation doesn't quite seem right to me.

Reason for more ram is because of graphic intense programs.

If I understand the question...it would seem to be "is it better to have 256 of PC3200 or 512 of PC2100"? is that the question?

Id go with the 512 all day long....even in benchmarks there is only a slight difference in the faster mem speeds....some of it is simply "unrealized" market hype.

You could even blow it out of proportion and ask the question this way...is it better to have 256 PC2700 or 512 100m sdram....now that would be an interesting comparison....but Id go with the 512 I think.....like the man said....more ram=less "page file" or "swap file" usage....and even pc100 is wayyyyyyy faster than using a swap file.

As far as mixing brands....I think for 99% of apps it is no problem...for something really super intense, maybe it would matter somehow. Since we all use "synchronized" dram I think that is the main factor now.

Well if your getting another stick of pc133, you shouldn't have a problem with it, mixing ram that is the same size, speed and latency is the ideal situation, but it should still work together, however that kingston and crucial should work just fine together and run nicely on your computer.
