nForce2 Cd rom problems
Hi guys. I just got a new Shuttle AN35N mobo, and am not experiencing some CD-ROM problems, most notably with my Lite-On burner. I have installed the new chipset drivers, to no avail. Basicially the symptoms include the drive not autorunning discs, not recognizing discs, and just not working correctly at all. Before the mobo upgrade, the drive had been running great on my KT-333 chipset. I have tried swapping the drive with my DVD drive, that to no avail as well. The DVD drive seems to work perfectly all the time, but the burner is just flaking out. I have heard rumours that the nForce2 has some IDE problems, but I couldn't find any threads about it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys.

You might want to check the jumper settings on the CD drive. If it is the 'slave', then set it to 'slave'. (if master, set to master, etc..)
The chipset drivers that you installed were from where... Shuttle or nVidia? If you haven't tried them yet... I would suggest installing the nVidia Unified driver v3.13 for nForce2 motherboards.
Does the BIOS info (when booting) show that it is detected?

Are you using the same IDE cable you had on the old machine?
Try another cable.

i've tried both the shuttle and nvidia drivers, including the 3.13's. I have also checked the jumpers, as well as trying a different cable, so i'm pretty at my wits end.

(1) Right click "My Computer" and choose "Properties"
(2) On the "Hardware" tab, click on [Device Manager]
(3) Expand the "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" and right-click on "NVIDIA nForce2 IDE Controller", and choose "Update Driver..."
(4) On the Hardware Update Wizard, choose the 2nd option (Install from a list or specific location (Advanced))
(5) Choose "Don't Search, I will choose...", and click [Next>]
(6) Of the hardware listed, choose "Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller"
Let that install and reboot. You will now be using the standard Microsoft IDE driver instead of the nVidia driver.

Try another drive maybe. It might have just decided to die at a very unconvinient time. Makng the problem elusive. Laser might be dusty-tyr a dry cleaning disc. (has a brush on it-no alchohal)

ok, just cleaned it...installing warcraft III as I type this. I'm noticing that it's having the hardest time reading the very cd's that it's burned. This is just screwy.

Ok, if i leave the burner in by itself as the 2ndary slave, it works fine. If I then attach the DVD-Rom as 2nd master, this is where my problems arise.
System specs, maybe that will help:
