yes, it's been plugged back in for some time now...

regarding grounding the board. i have 5 spacers between the board and case, should i have more? i found a thread on another forum where the symptoms were identical to mine, and the problem was an extra spacer that wasn't being used causing the board to short. my ideas are running out here...

Follow GorillaPC's advice, and take the motherboard out of the case. This will eliminate the possibility of the case being the problem. If everything works outside the case, then you may just need to get it into the case correctly.

I know it is a real drag having to dissasemble your pc to diagnose this. It is really the only step you have left.

In any case (no pun intended), once you have done that, you should have no problems getting the board returned for replacement.

THat would be your only resolution if the problem exists with the hardware outside of the case as well.

THe nforce boards are nice when they run right. I have seen more failures from this chipset than any others.

Still I like the chipsets so I will keep using them.

Good luck.

since the burner works well while the dvd player is out of the system, do you think that possibly the dvd player is messing something up along the way?

change the jumpers on the drives. maybe try 'cs' (cable select) instead of master or slave (or the other way around).

what if you move the DVD drive to the primary channel... and leave the CD drive on the secondary channel. Does that cause problems?

(also, did you try sacrificing the drive to the computer gods? maybe they are displeased)

if you sacrifice a goat on a rainy tuesday it might make a difference to the computer gods ... no wait a minute that is for scci chains that don't work.

Maybe DVD drives are rainy wednesdays ...?

ok guys...i swapped a different drive out, and that was no good...and i also tried putting one hd and rom per IDE channel, and THAT was no good...so aside from taking the grounded mobo out of the case and testing to that effect, is there any more concivable ideas to try besides sending this thing back?

Once again, what i've tried:

Checked all jumpers, confirmed their correctness.

Swapped the drives themselves between master and slave.

Tried different cables.

Flashed mobo BIOS.

Flashed both ROM firmwares.

Changed from DMA to PIO mode.

Reverted back to MS IDE drivers.

Put a HD and Rom on the same cable for both channels.

Made sure the mobo was grounded properly with standoffs.

Made a sacrifice to the motherboard gods...

it's been discovered that the drive is generating errors within windows. looking at the event viewer, there are 100's of errors of ID: 11.
