9800pro vs 5900 ultra

Hey all

I have found a Hercules 3D Prophet 9800 Pro 128MB DDR & Half Life 2 Bundle with there copper cooling system for £260.00

But i have also found a Asus fx5900 ultra for £200.00

taking price into consideration what is the better card. one note, the 9800pro is NEW and the fx5900 ultra is 2nd hand.

I see soooo many posts with some saying fx is better then 9800 is better, i dont know what to buy.

I want the best gaming and benchmarker card.

please help!

Dream

Forget the 5900 ultra. If you can find a 5900 non ultra that would be a lot better of a decision. The ultra is just mearly a little bit faster than a non ultra. And a non ultra can be over clocked to 5950 ultra speeds without extra cooling.

It also depends on what games you play? For DX8 games the 5900fx non ultra will be faster than a 9800 pro. But it newer DX9 games(Half-life 2, etc...) the Radeon 9800 pro will pull out in the lead. I say just get whats cheaper.

Ok the 9800 Pro will oblitherate a 9700 Pro (how do I know? I own BOTH), end of story. Example

Athlon 2.2ghz w/9800 Pro=6300 in 3dmark 03

Athlon 2.17ghz w/9700 Pro=4996 in 3dmark 03

BUT lets get into actual games you will play......

UT2K3=I see no diff between the 2

Max Payne 2=9800 Pro runs it quite a bit better but still the 9700 runs it very nicely

CoD=9800 Pro beats the 9700 Pro again just a bit

A game not out yet involving monsters from another dimension= 9800 Pro is noticably smoother but the 9700 Pro is still totally playable and smooth.

In the end, if you wanna be a benchmark burner the 9800 is the way to go. But if you want great gameplay and a reasonable price pick up a 9700 Pro. I picked up mine 2 weeks ago for $230 and newegg.com has one for $220 now. In the Price/Performance world the 9700 Pro KILLS the 9800 Pro(which I paid $330 for). Where as the 9800 Pro kicks the 9700 Pro in the family jewels in the pure performance catagory. And forget any Geforce FX except the 5900nu and MAYBE the 5900XT, looks like Nvidia is getting their act together and making competent drivers so those are a decent option, that is if you can deal with a 9600Pro completly mopping the floor with them in Half-Life 2 and other PURE DX9 games.

Now I'll give you some linkage my friend

9700 Pro's

9800np

9500 Pro

9600XT
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...alog=48&depa=1

5900nu
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...alog=48&depa=1

5900XT (aka 5900se)
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...alog=48&depa=1

Thats a list of cards I'd recomend, from best deal to...well...not worst, but not as super awsome on the Price/Performance thing and future compatibility. BTW the 9500 Pro is a good card. I had one till a coupla weeks ago (can you guess what happened? I sold it for $200(!?!?!) and spent an extra $30 and got a 9700 Pro) It'll run DX9 games better then ANY Nvidia card and is decently priced.

Get whichever one you find cheaper. Both are good for any task.

if you want the best benchmarking then get the 9800 pro . the fx 5900 is no slouch but it doesn't out benchmark the 9800 pro . in some it does but in most it doesn't .

if price is is the factor the 5900 ultra is only marginaly slower so it will be the better value .

but with either i don't think you will be unhappy .

and Jaun he is in the UK i bet thats why he gave the prices in pounds not dollars . so newegg isn't an option for him .

Again, this comparision sh0ould be change to 5900 non ultra vs Radeon9800pro. The ultra is only a few FPS faster than a non ultra. And a non ultra can be easily OC to ultra speeds in less than 10 seconds without any bios flashes or anything. Infact the card comes with the program that will do it for you. So save money and get the non ultra.
