Windows + New Video Card = Re-install OS

Have to rant!!

What is it with Windows and new video cards?

I see so many people having problems installing new cards and the system goes freaky.

Got my son a new Geforce 5200 128mb card for Christmas. (has good reviews BTW)

Uninstalled the drivers for the old card, shut down, and installed the new card by the book.

Installed the new drivers and the system goes nuts. Freezing, sluggish, etc.

After 8 hours of futzing around and troubleshooting I gave my son 2 options: return the card or format and start over from scratch.

He choose to format and start over. 10 more hours of backing up data.

Now the machine is roaring away and running like a champ.

What a PITA!!

Now I get to install his old card into my dual-boot PSII.

Somehow I get the feeling that I will be taking the name of Bill Gates in vain quite often on this 98 & W2K project. Can't wait.

gotta love that...not .
I feel your pain Bill... too many times has this happened to me.. Then after you format and think wheeew this is gonna be easy... other issues start to pop up during the installation of windows... Thats why i started making myself install things in a certain order now. drivers for everything but video& sound.
reboot
install vid dirvers. reboot
sound . reboot
updates. rebootx 1000(thanks to Gates)
software.
