Systems ABIT nForce2 SPP--> HD Problems

I just recommended a system to my friend, but hes getting a DMI error every time he configures his Hard Drive to be the Master.

He has these parts:
ABIT nForce2 SPP
2500+ Barton
512mb x 2
Maxtor 80GB 7200RPM IDE ULTRA ATA133
9600 xt
52x Cdrom

Right now he has the cdrom drive and the HD both on the same IDE cable...could this be the problem? When he disconnects the CDrom drive he still gets a DMI error when the HD is the Master.

He only gets an error when the HD is master...we tried setting it as slave, but then it automatically changed it around so the Hd was the master...then we got the DMI error again.

This DMI error makes it so he cannot install windows XP...the installation program is telling him that he must "make sure his hard drive is installed properly"...

Does anyone know what the problem could be?

you need to make sure you are looking at the proper jumper settings...there should be a diagram on the drive somewhere....most of them have the same setting if you use it as master or if you use it alone.....BUT, some of them have two different settings-one for SINGLE (by itself on the cable) and one for master with a slave present.

You could try it with the jumper on "cable select" and see what happens.

Also make sure you are using an 80 wire cable and not a 40 wire....I dont think it would give a dmi error but who knows.

okay yeah i checked the different jumper settings, and the different options are

1)master
2) slave
3) cable select

and thats it.

So we tried setting the cdrom drive and the hard drive both as cable select, and we got the HD to be master and the cdrom drive to be slave, but we still get that dmi error .

then we toff off the cdrw drive, and tried the HD by itself as master...still got the DMI error .
