to begin to troubleshoot this, i would:

1) create a new account w/admin privileges.
2) login using that account and try the windows updates again.

open the registry editor and goto:

hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\windows\curre ntversion\policies\explorer

is there a nowindowsupdate value there? is so, delete it and reboot.

no leave that value alone. we're one step closer to narrowing it down...

now open the group policy editor (click on start -- run -- and type: gpedit.msc)

then go to:

computer configuration-windows settings--security settings-local policies. click on the User rights assigment folder and in the right pane window:

under load & unload device drives, does it show administrators under both local & efective setting?

well, that's it then. you need to add the Administrators group to that policy. just click Add and so on...

reboot and try the update again.

it's 2am here in ny [yawn] i'm heading off to bed...let me know if that fixed it.

[edit] ooops...sorry if this wasn't clear. dbl-click on that policy, click add button, add the group, and Check ON the local policy box.
