Take Laptop apart

Short and Sweet:

Got a laptop, (free)

Can't read operating system

Think HD is bad.

How do I take it apart?

Got any tutorials or something? Pics would be awsome!

Need Model #? It's a Compaq.

Most Compaqs I've worked on had a little trap door on the bottom secured with a couple of tiny torx screws. Open the door and pull the HD away from the interface plug.

Go to Compaq's site and look for any documentation on the model #. They're in cahoots w/ HP now, but their site still works.

Ok I got the laptop apart!!! Luckily HD was right under front bezel part, no need to take mobo part out. Tried my Windows XP disk again and it says the the Hd cannor be formatted. Either disk is no plugged in or damaged.

The Laptop HAS been dropped (twice). Do you agree that it is probably the HD?

I just stopped by Pricewatch.com and I have no clue which HD's are laptop ones. Is there a special number or name?

Never worked with laptops if you haven't guessed.

They ARE HP. There is no more Compaq as a company. Just a "brand" of HP computers.

I've seen 20-30Gb lappy drives go for under $80 on AT forums. You might want to check the FS/T forum there if you need a good deal. If you buy it from a vendor, you'll pay through your nose.
