TV Repair?
I am having a problem with my toshiba 55" cinema series tp55h95 rear projection tv. it is 5yrs 2mos old and the extended warranty just ran out.
The convergence keeps going out of whack. I re adjust it but it doesn't stay. it is the red color on the plus sign that is out of alignment and it is worse toward the edges. please advice me as to what kind of repair it needs, what it should cost, and if i can do it myself.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

When a circuit will not hold adjustment, it is usually a capacitor heating up little by little, causing the circuit to be unstable. Which capacitor?... thats why TV shop technicians get paid good bucks..it could be anywhere in the red color circuit..it will need to be tracked down and replaced.. may be more than one.
What should it cost?...well, bench time around here at most TV shops start at $60 bucks just to look at it. parts and labor are extra. If it is an 'easy' repair...meaning the tech has done it before (likely) and gets right to the problem area quickly and replaces one or two caps.. I'll venture if you get out of the shop with less than $100 bucks, count your lucky self blessed.
Now, if you keep fiddling with it...and putting up with the messed up red...and those caps blow out.. you may be faced with a lot more repair than now.

I recently went through a similiar problem. (long story short, after almost getting totally ripped off)
I looked online for an authorized service rep. It was the best move, this guy that came out, he knew exactly what to do, took care of it, and it cost 185. Not bad considering the bad guy wanted to charge about 600 to relace 'stuff'.
I have a Mitsubishi, why don't you try a google search and find a local authorized repair person in your area for Toshiba.
I hope you get your problem solved with as great a repairman as I got.....
Hurry, Super Bowl is coming up.......lol

I have a Philips 55PP9401 HDTV which I purchased on Jan. 26, 2002. I have an extended warranty until 2005. The convergence has been giving me problems as well. I had a service guy come out (assigned by Circuit City) and he did the convergence but then a few days later it had 2 green lines in the screen. He came out again and said the RED bulb was bad. Came out again and replaced the bulb and adjusted the convergence but said he could not adjust the HD convergence without a special tool that he had to order. So he orders it and comes out again and adjusts the convergence on the tv (standard cable, and HD). Then tells me that my cable needs to better quality to get the convergence exact and that he adjusted the convergence for (standard cable, input 3 and input 4 <--HD ) but said that I would have to let the "NEW" tube break in. Run the tv for atleast 4-5 hours a day to let the new RED bulb break in. He said that is why I am still having convergence problems because the new RED bulb is going to be brighter than the other 2. Anyway, I called Phillips back and told them to send him back out (he is coming this Tuesday) and fix this thing! The red is still off in the corners and no matter how many times I use the (Intelesense) adjustment, it will not correct itself. So he better be ready for a good day of work. I didn't fork out the money for the extended warranty for nothing.

Sorry for the thread hijack...
Sweeper! Circuit City apparently believes that 4 trips to repair an RPTV is reasonable. After 4 trips and no success in sight, I politely (but firmly) asked the store manager where I bought the set what they could do to solve the problem. They replaced my Hitachi with a new one.

i have a older 50" big screen tv about 1985 im guessing. and the main board inside that controls the projectors had bad capacitors.. i pulled it out and got my radio shack book ,orders new capacitors and so forth. replaced the burnt ones and had to go through a pain staking process of adjusting the settings by hand on the board... cause no one in my area would take on the job and local stores hadnt sold or repaired tv's like mine in years. the tv was well worth the $50 i spent at the yard sale to buy.. common symptoms of bad parts on the board.. colors such as green ,blue ,red in corners ,words pull off to the sides. people and objects look like they have more then one head (in green or blue).. tv cannot be watched in pleasure with it that bad....

Well I don't know anything about TV's and or repairing them. I've been dealing with this since Dec. 4th. and everytime the picture just worsens. I guess I will call consumer relations and complain again and try to get the set replaced. I work 8-6pm M-F and it's hard to find someone to come to my house and wait for the repairman to show up, then wait for him to fix it (or try to in my case). I would just prefer a new TV or how ever they do it.

I purchased a 51 toshiba from 6th ave. I was offered one of their expensive warranty's, but refused. I was told by someone one here where I could get one a lot cheaper. I purchased a 2 year for $110 where 6th ave wanted to charge $324. The warranty I have can be renewed when you have 30days left. ALso, I did not have to buy it right away like MACK, as long as I had 90days left on my Mfg. warranty for parts and labor, that was fine.
I like haveing the warranty, it is like insurance.
