Hows this compared to the 9600xt i have the money for the SE but not the XT. If the SE is not a good card what card is a good card for around the $150 range?

the 9600xt is only marginaly better than the 9600pro. ( a couple minor improvements.)

Do the 9600, XT, Pro and standard card have the same core and different clocks or do they have different chips?

I mean could I overclock the 9600 to the pro and the pro to the XT?

The truth is out there ... and not hard to find at all:

http://www.ati.com/products/radeon96...o/compare.html

9600SE and plain 9600 use the same core and RAM, the SE just has half as many RAM chips and a smaller, low profile board. Some don't have the 2nd VGA output either.

9600XT comes from a chip manufacturing improvement - hence the much higher core clock - and is supposed to replace the "pro" flavor. "Pro" cards have a pre-improvement chip that won't clock nearly as high.

"Do the 9600, XT, Pro and standard card have the same core and different clocks or do they have different chips?"

Same gpu and mem.....the XT can auto oclock the card to fullest stable operation. Thats the diff. TO do it it has one major hardware diff. A thermal diode sensor in the gpu. Like XP and P4's have. This is to tell the oclocking mechanism when to stop upping the juice under diff ambient temp. All temp/clock ratio's are fully tested at ati at really high case temps and slighlty above agp volts to ensure max stability in most any situation. The xt is a good thing. I hope it continues to sell out like it has. As its somthing I would like to see continued. Nothing like the Graphic's card manufacturer clocking your card for you and not voiding warrenty's!

Xtreeme, as ATi wrote in the link I gave, the 9600XT has a 500 MHz core clock to begin with (before dynamic overclocking) while the Pro was a mere 400.

Oh-didnt know that. The 9800XT is same clock speed right? I know the mem speed increase on these cards yeilds next to speed gain so I asume ati went with higher gpu for that reason. 9600 is still only ATI .13 fab gpu thoughw ith same architecture. Just clocked a tid higher. Not like the diff between persay a 9700pro and a 9800pro where the actually tweaked the gpu AA and AF in dx9 some. And lowered temps.
