How well do LCD monitors scale?

I'm trying to decide between a 17" LCD and a 21" CRT Display. I'd like to go LCD but I can't stand the high resolutions that are native to most of them. So, how well do they scale?

Do they look crappy if you don't run them at the recommended resolution?

Just to let you know, I run my 17" Viewsonic CRT at 800 x 600 and my 21" Sun CRT at 1024 X 768.

Well if your gonna be gaming your better off going with a CRT unless you get an LCD with a really low response time. Nothing ever looks "crappy" if you down the resolution, it should be fine.

there is a distinct and visible difference when running LCD's at their non-optimal resolutions, esp at the lower resolutions. a 17" LCD running at 800x600 isn't very appealing, imo.

i would suggest you go to a local store and see how it looks for yourself. try viewing the 17" at 1024x768. you may find that it is quite tolerable on a 17" since text renders very sharp on LCDs as opposed to CRTs.

fyi, i have a tri-panel setup of 18-inchers and i experience zero eye fatique even after weekend marathons in front of them. i would ever go back to CRTs again.

CRT has even sharper pixels than the LCD's. Everythings good with CRT, just that its huge and eat up spaces. Not to mention, heavy too

I've got my 15" LCD @ 1024x768 and the picture looks beautiful.

not true...at their optimal resolutions esp @1280x or 1600x, text is generally sharper on an LCD than a CRT of the same size. to even get close to that quality on a CRT, you need an exceptionally well-manufacturer gun assembly and they are very delicate too. CRT problems like misconvergence & pin-cushioning are simply non-existent on LCDs.

Yeah, I'll have to go by Worst Buy and give it a shot. My mistake is that I head to the monitors section of the store instead of going to the PCs where I could experiment a little.

I don't game on my main box so that's not an issue. I think I could deal with 1024 x 768 on a 17" LCD but not the 1280x1024 Native Resolution.

I'm looking at these 17" LCDs.

Sorry not pixels, but resolutions

LCD can't be in direct sunlight for long time too. You would see bubbles or missing liquid crystals underneath. It happened to mine

the samsung would probably be in the lead. i avoid the NEC monitors like the plague...way too many dead pixels w/the ones i've seen. the specs on the viewsonic look extremely nice (faster pixel speed than the samsung)...i have not seen their latest models.

i can tell you that the early viewsonic LCDs models weren't very good...we stopped buying them because they developed problems w/the backlight way too quickly.
